Fortunately the Milk

I bought it on a whim.  Pure impulse.  I didn’t really know what to expect.  The cover has the picture of a monster pressing the button on a contraption while a person beside him holds a bottle with the legend ‘Milk’ and grins.

I’m talking about the latest book added to the ILM School library. It’s one by Neil Gaiman.  I’ve dabbled in other works of the great Gaiman.  I found them…well..meh.  Seeing the ‘High Recommendations’ by fellow artist friends, I decided to venture into the depths of Gaiman’s imaginative mind…one more time.

This book is titled, “Fortunately, the Milk”.  Well, Mr. Gaiman?  Fortunately, the Milk, what?

Oh I got my answer alright.   Boy, What a cracker of a tale this turned out to be!  I LOVED it!

Fortunately the Milk, is one father’s adventurous explanation to his children tackling why he is late in getting the milk from the store.  How can you blame the father if his narrative involves pirates, a mountain god, vumpires (i’ve spelt it right) and other very valid reasons.  Because of which, Fortunately the milk, well… you have to read the rest of the book to find out.

Wish I could share more, but enough spoilers.  Last thing I’d like to add is that the illustrations in the books are so delightfully expressive, I actually found myself copying one of them.  You can see it below : )

Fortunately the Milk will be sitting quietly in the corner of the ILM library, I wonder who will be the first child to wander on this unforgettable adventure!

You know, I am thrilled in contemplation of the day when an ILM child late to school will come up with an explanation that tops Dad in “Fortunately the Milk”. I can almost hear a little one starting off, “Well, I was walking to school and heard a noise like this: T h u m m t h u m m. I looked up and saw a huge silver disc hovering in the air above Koramangala 1st Block….
